Five ways a belt wears out
Many belts fail in the same few places.
- The surface starts to peel.
- The strap cracks across the fold.
- The layers separate.
- The holes tear.
- The buckle works loose.
How a belt is made can make some of these more likely.
"Genuine leather" tells you less than you think
- It tells you real leather is used. It does not tell you which part of the hide, or how the belt is put together.
- Full-grain leather keeps the natural outer layer of the hide intact. With wear it tends to soften, darken and develop a patina.
- Other leathers can come from different parts of the hide, be coated, or be built from layers. They can look good when new, and can show surface wear sooner.
- Different leather terms describe very different materials. That is why the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has guidelines for clear leather labeling.

- A belt is usually an afterthought. Next to $60 jeans, a $30 belt is an easy choice.
- It looks good on day one, and day one is when you decide.
- When it cracks, replacing it feels easier than asking why it happened.
The 5-point check. Works in any store, ours included.
- The leather. Does the page say which leather it is? "Full-grain" is an answer. "Genuine leather" is not.
- The strap. One solid piece, or layers glued together. Layers can separate.
- The buckle. Solid metal, moving smoothly, sitting flat on the strap. Ours are made in Italy and nickel-free.
- The finishing. Look at the edges, the stitching, and how the buckle is attached.
- The information. A shop that tells you what the belt is made of and how to care for it is easier to judge.
- Skip this if you like changing belts with the seasons.

Three questions
Full-grain leather keeps the natural grain surface of the hide intact. "Genuine leather" is a much broader term: it tells you that real leather is used, but not what type of leather it is or how it was finished.
The belts featured here are sized in centimeters, from XS-75 to XXL-110. For the best fit, measure a belt you already own from the buckle fold to the hole you use most.
Full-grain leather needs very little care. Keep it dry, wipe it with a soft cloth when needed, and use a leather conditioner occasionally to help keep it supple.
